Tenison, Thomas
(1636–1715)
   Archbishop.
   Tenison was educated at the University of Cambridge. As Rector of St Martin in the Fields, London, he came to public notice as an excellent preacher and as the author of An Argument for Union with the Dissenters. He supported the revolution against King James II in 1688 and was appointed Archdeacon of London in 1689. In 1692 he became Bishop of Lincoln and he was consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury in 1695. He is remembered as a founder member of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and for establishing the first public library in London. He was much admired by John Evelyn, but was described by Jonathan Swift as ‘a very dull man’.
